Problem
solving through IT and modern technologies is essential for effective resource
management, good governance. Not only developing countries are focusing on
masking every business with IT, but developed ones have achieved larger mile
stones in this domain. Developed countries have initiated the IoT (Internet of Things) Era.
GIS seems to
be an innovative technology in a sense that data today needs GIS to be
incorporated to mine the results end consumer wants. GIS is geographic information science, which
handles spatial or geographical data. Various commercial and open source
platforms provide map, and various spatial tiers. Geo- Server, OSM and many
more are providing various levels of services.
How can I
use GIS in my field of expertise:

Use of GIS
is spread across the globe; there would hardly be any field that cannot be
benefited with GIS.
- You are a business man, with efficient ERP software but to visualize your data geographically you need a GIS. How many customers are from sector-A which has brought goods larger then x amount, what is their travel distance from address they have provided?
- You are a local government, you need to have a proper GIS system of your Town for effective decision making
- You are a NGO that helps people around; you need to select areas that have population greater than x within 50 km of your office.
- You are a Disaster Management Authority, you need to have GIS based maps for preparedness and recovery
- You are a shepherd with x thousand sheep you need to have GPS based chip hanged with every sheep to track where it is, and display that data on a GIS map
- You are a farmer you need GIS based maps, to understand behavior and type of your soil.
- You are a geologist that is in search of oil, you need to have GIS based study maps for exploration and drilling process
Whichever
field you are in, you would need GIS based approach that can solve spatial domain
problems. How much this innovative tool is being incorporated in our domain or
area, answer would be with readers.
Spread of
knowledge, cross linking of subjects and expertise, inter relation of research,
globalization, vast sharing of data have forced problem solver to come up with
newer innovations and technologies, GIS stands among those that can very
effectively solve many problems. Different universities across the globe teach
GIS as a separate field. We can leverage our ROI (Return on Investment) through
GIS.
